A couple recent developments led directly to the creation of this mixtape...

First, and foremost, my daughter was born last year. I know that at some point I'm going to want to share some of my favorite music with her, even if she's not terribly interested in listening to old-man rap. Second, it seems like lately I've been questioning a lot about HipHop and music in general. I've come a little too close to forgetting what made me fall in love with HipHop in the first place. I find myself listening to the voices of people whose musical "tastes" change on a whim...influenced by just about every superficial measure of quality, ignoring the music itself. The songs I've included here are a small sample of what I really should have been listening to all along.

The title ("Too Much HipHop") is a phrase that I've come to despise. Anyone feeling the urge to say those words in that order while I'm in the DJ booth should keep it to themselves. Just smack yourself and keep it moving.

Like I said, this is just a small sample. I've had the good fortune of being able to interview, work with, produce for, or simply meet many of the artists on this mix. They represent an ever-evolving movement that has never had to beg for anyone's "buy in." They also just happen to sound decent mixed together.

If this is your kind of music, you'll know it within the first few minutes of listening, and I hope it brings a smile to your face. Maybe you can play it for your kids (I made a clean version too).

If this is your kind of music, I know that you'll think of 10 music fans just like you - Share it, Blog it, Tweet it, Facebook it, MySpace it, Friendster it - like an anti-clown pyramid scheme.

If I hear it playing out of someone's car this summer, I may make another one.

If I don't hear it playing out of someone's car this summer, I may still make another one.

Thanks for listening.

- Kev
