WRAPUP - Metropolitan Museum Of Art

It's been a solid month of weddings, corporate events, and club gigs so I've been pretty quiet here on the blog, but I wanted to post a quick look back at my night at The Met. In Mid-Sept, the good people at Scratch Events booked me to play Rodman & Renshaw's Gala at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art. I was set up in the Temple of Dendur room. I remember it being pretty breathtaking when I saw it for the first time as a high school student years ago, so it was cool to be able to DJ in there. Also, Mary J Blige was the headliner, and she had the investment community and their guests rockin...word.

WRAPUP - Fashion's Night Out NYC 2011

I'm just about to head back into the city to DJ a special event this evening at one of New York's cultural cornerstones, the Metropolitan Museum of Art...but before I leave the house, I wanted to post these images from my Fashion's Night Out gigs last week in the big city. Fun was had by all...word.

What says high-fashion in New York City more than "DJ Kev Sakoda"? Well, ummm...before you answer that, recognize that I'll be spinning not one but TWO events (at Lord & Taylor and Bloomingdale's) today in connection with Fashion's Night (and Day) Out here in my adopted home...

2. 7PM-11PM: Bloomingdale's (1000 3rd Ave btwn 59th/60th Sts) 1st Floor Cosmetics (yes, that's right).

Moke & Tone Remix Contest

Last weekend I knocked out a remix to enter in Moke & Tone's "Destiny" Remix Challenge.

The winner was announced yesterday. DiaDiesel out of CT took top honors, but your boy Kev got some recognition as well...so I wanted to share...

The judging panel consisted of Moke & Tone, !llmind as well as myself. Took a night off from spinning at the club last night and ventured out to Williamsburg (the other Brooklyn) to cheer on my buddies competing in Red Bull's Thre3style DJ competition.

WRAPUP - The Beginning and the End: Fundraiser & Party

This past Friday night I was lucky enough to be part of the festivities as Brooklyn director Kristin Wheeler threw a jumpoff at SOUTHPAW to raise funds for the production of her independent film, "The Beginning And The End." Great people and great times. Many thanks to Kristin, the homie Michelle McDevitt (Audible Treats stand UP!), Dan Sterling (my turntable cohort), and Isaac Betancourt with the dope camera work.

So...irony of ironies...

I sent out that diatribe last week about how long I've been on the air, and then literally a couple days later I got word from the station that I won't have a slot this semester (which starts officially next week). Hopefully I'll get back on the air in the summer, but until then I'll be taking a little holiday. For my last show, which will air live this coming Saturday, I've put together a special send-off including some of the exclusive joints I've produced/recorded though the years (including freestyles by Dead Prez, Afu-Ra, Casual, Little Brother, Beatnuts, and more), pieces of the new mixtape, along with some new music from the homies...see playlist below.

Downlow Mixtape 2011

HAPPY NEW YEAR Everyone!

2011 begins what I believe is my 20TH YEAR on the air at KSPC 88.7FM in Claremont, Cali. I say, "I believe" because ever since my boy Fuzz brought me to the station to assist with "The Downlow" way back when, I've stopped saying the year (remember what Tip said...yeah, the real Tip). From that point on, I've been lucky enough to help introduce some of the world's best HipHop artists, working with the homies Phyz.Ed, J-Free, and DJ Hyphen along the way.

In the mid-late 90's, Phyz.Ed and I started making mixtapes (when they were really still cassettes). We sold them hand-to-hand at the legendary club UNITY all around Los Angeles (maximum respect to Bigga B & Orlando). The principle always remained the same...good music actually blended together with some skill...not just disposable amateur compilations.

The intervening years have brought many changes to HipHop culture and the art of mixtape DJing (or lack thereof). Rather than complain about what I don't dig, I'd prefer to keep playing the type of music I like, for the type of people who still like to hear it. This mix isn't really a "Best of 2010" (who the hell am I to tell you what's best to you?), but it definitely represents a small slice of the joints I enjoyed rocking during the year. I hope you can pop it in your virtual-deck and make that hour of your life a little more enjoyable.
